Salvador Dali:
The Persistence of Memory, 1931
oil on canvas 24 x 33 cm

The Museum of Modern Art, New York

Like the later version of this work softwatches are dominating as a theme in a surrealist landscape. Clocks are sleeping as if they are organic lying on an edge as if liquid or on a sleeping face. Time is asleep and dreaming. It proposes to think of us not being conscious of the reality of clocktime: it is in a state of sleep, surrealist. We dream, we do not see the reality with our soft vision of mechanical time. Should we wake up? Is an artist painting of contentment or does he accuse the society? Sure is that this reminder is persisting.
